Climate and Sustainability Course Facilitator

Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

Since 2024, I’ve served as a volunteer facilitator on the IFoA’s Climate Risk and Sustainability course – an online, self-paced programme designed to give actuaries a foundational understanding of the physical, financial, and strategic implications of climate change.

My role focuses on the two capstone seminar modules – Inequality and Climate Chage and the Closing Presentation and Discussion. I work with small participant groups (typically around 6 – 10), supporting them in preparing a final group presentation. My facilitation is intentionally hands-off – listening closely, offering nudges when needed, and helping ensure the conversations stay connected to the bigger picture.

The course isn’t assessed, so part of my role is also to gently prompt contribution, ensure fair participation, and offer thoughtful questions that stretch the discussion. Sometimes it’s as simple as adding a timely resource link or clarifying a task; other times it’s holding space for reflection or synthesis.

What I enjoy most is seeing participants discover something new – about climate risk, about sustainability, or even about themselves. With an international cohort, the diversity of perspectives gives each group’s presentation a depth that couldn’t be scripted. The clarity comes not from control, but from collaboration.

This role aligns with how I work more broadly: creating containers for learning, reflection, and meaning-making.
It’s also a space where I stay connected to both my actuarial roots and my deeper values – of care, sustainability, and thoughtful contribution.
